Praise be to Allah, and may His peace and blessings be upon Muhammad, and upon his family and companions, and all those who follow him.
No religious law or social system has encouraged the establishment of peace in the same way that Islam has done.
PEACE"is the most common word on a muslim's tongue. whenever two people meet, they exchange greeting, wishing each other peace: "peace be upon you" Prayer itself is concluded with the announcement of peace - once to the right, once to the left and once to the front if there is an Imam in front - as if to greet his brothers after he had left them during the brief moments that he turned completely to Allah.
The frequent reiteration of this phrase ‘peace be upon you’ is in actual fact an external manifestation of the desire for peace within. Islam wishes to inculcate this feeling within every individual that he should become a true lover of peace, to the point that this feeling starts welling up in his heart, finding expression whenever he meets a person.
To bring about an atmosphere of peace within the society Islam has given a number of commandments. For instance, the Prophet of Islam observed ‘A believer is one from whom people feel secure as regards their lives and property (At-Tirmizi). Another hadith has this to say: By God, he is not a believer from whose nuisance his neighbor is not safe. (Al-Bukhari)
Islam has ordered the practise of this great virtue through respect and self-restraint even at the most testing of times such as Hajj (pilgrimage). During this sacred time, a pilgrim is strictly prohibited from cutting his nails, shortening his hair, destroying a tree, killing an animal or harming anyone in any way, even if he shall find the killer of his father he is not permitted to hurt him at all.
Islam and War
The Quran is very explicit about the justice part of the relationship when God stated in Verse 60:08 "Allah forbids you not, with regard to those who fight you not for (your) Faith nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them: for Allah loveth those who are just."
The Qur'an states: "To those against whom war is made, permission is given [to defend themselves], because they are wronged - and verily, Allah is Most Powerful to give them victory." (22:39)
· Jihad:is a defensive war conducted within the limits of justice, in general it refers to both the struggle to establish justice in the world and the struggle to surrender one's consciousness to God.
Islam doesnot exclude the use of force to curb evil if there is no other workable alternative.civil life in islam is aimed towards peace.Islam permits fighting in self-defense, in defense of the religion, or by those wo have been expelled forciblyfrom thier homes. At the same time ,Islam requires one to treat one's enemy mercifully. It lays down strict rules of combat which include prohibitions against harming civilians and against destroying crops, trees, and livestock. Islam also requires that if an enemy declares his desire to end hostilitiesand seek peace, the muslims must do the same.
Quran 2:190-193.
* Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for Allah loveth not transgressors.
* And slay them wherever ye catch them, and turn them out from where they have turned you out; for tumult and oppression are worse than slaughter; but fight them not at the Sacred Mosque, unless they (first) fight you there; but if they fight you, slay them. Such is the reward of those who suppress faith.
* But if they cease, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
* And fight them on until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in Allah; but if they cease, let there be no hostility except to those who practice oppression.
The United Nation's Charter does explicitly discuss the right of the occupied people to resist their occupiers. The legitimacy of fighting aggression by means of Jihad or armed struggle is extended not only from the Islamic teachings but also from the international law and UN Charter.
A forerunner of the collective security principle and collective intervention to stop aggresion,at least in theory, as manifested in the united nations charter , is the quranic refernce"...make peace between them(the two fighting groups), but if one of the two persists in aggresion against the other,fight the aggressors until they revert to GOD's commadment."{49:9}
Historically all traditions, muslims, chritian, jew as well as others , had their lapses in honestly following the valued ideals of their religions or philosophie. We all made mistakes, and we still do , muslims are no exception, this no reflection on the religion ,but it shows how desperatly humanity is in need of better education , more enduring concern for human diginty, rights and freedom , and vigilant pursuit of justice
evidences of peace in islam:
THE HUDYBIA TREATY AS THE FIRST TREATY IN ISLAM:
Suhail Bin 'Omroo approached the Holy Prophet (blessings and salutations of Allah on him) and after much discussion, truce was settled on the following terms:
1. This year the Holy Prophet (blessings and salutations of Allah on him) and all his companions (Allah is pleased with them all) will go back without performing Hajj or Omrah.
2. They will perform Hajj (Muslim pilgrimage in and around Makkah) next year provided they stay not more than three days.
3. The Muslims will bear no arms in the Hajj next year except self defence sheathed swords.
4. The validity of the truce was agreed to be ten years.
5. The Quraysh will not fight the allies of the Holy Prophet S.A.W. and the Holy Prophet S.A.W. will not fight the allies of the Quraysh.
6. If any of the Quraysh embraces Islaam, the Holy Prophet will return him to the Quraysh; but if a Muslim turns apostate and joins Quraish, he will not be returned at any cost.
This last condition was extremely disturbing and disgusting to the Holy Prophet's S.A.W. companions (Allah is pleased with them). Hadhrat 'Omar (Allah is pleased with him) was extremely enraged, and he firmly solicited before the Holy Prophet (blessings and salutations of Allah on him) that the last condition is very humiliating. The Holy Prophet (blessings and salutations of Allah on him) smiled and replied that any one who turns apostate and joins them is of no use to us; and if some one becomes Muslim from amongst them and comes to us, but we return him to them,Allah the Sublime will create better conditions for us somehow or the other that such returned Muslim will become an asset there. Meanwhile Aboo Jandal was thrown to the Muslims badly beaten and chained. He was the son of Suhail, the truce and treaty maker of the Quraish. Treaty was not yet signed so the Holy Prophet S.A.W. and all the Muslims were swayed from the shrieks of Aboo Jandal but his father Suhail told that the Treaty is operative. Thus Aboo Jandal was returned and treaty was signed. The Holy Prophet S.A.W. honored his words before being confirmed which further made his truthful deals as the most effective pattern of his life throughout. Briefly, this truce was settled with great difficulty.
a full Sura starts from this great achievement (Sura Fatah) saying:
"Surely it is a great victory for you ....... " (Al-Quraan : XLVIII: 1 to 3)
